Im not trying to brag and say how great we are. No, that’s not who I am. What I want to tell you is how we came to be who we are today and explain a little about our humble beginings.
In September of 1991 my parents bought a video game rental business called D.C. Comp-u-rent. Unfortunately, the days were numbered for this business due to the changes that were occurring in the industry. In 1993 I was finished high school and I talked to my mom and dad about perhaps getting into computers, as I felt it could be the next big thing. It was also a good fit to our current family business, as we could start fazing out the video game business and bringing in the computer business.
In the fall of 1994 I just finished a 6 month long course that ran 5 days a week. I was in the same class room from 9 to 4 learning all I needed to know about computers. I then took another course about networking for 3 months. When I finished I remember being told that Windows 95 will be a big thing when it comes out soon, and that the internet will be driving new computer sales soon.
We had no room in the store at the time for a repair shop. I renovated the furnace room to put in two small one person desks and a few shelves. This is where I started to fix computers. The room was only a 6 x 8 foot room. I will never forget how hot that room would get when the furnace kicked in coupled with the computers that I was working on!
It was hard at first. I had all of my book smarts in my head, I had all the tools and theories that I needed. What I had to learn was how to apply what I knew to each job. I worked long and late many days and enjoyed what I was doing.
Over the years, I was able to refine what I knew, and was able to get the same jobs done in less time. The industry and technology was changing back in the late 1990’s. Most of the tech guys out there were working in a void, as computers were a learn-it-yourself kind of craft. That has changed considerably today with many of the techs and the younger generations using things like YouTube to educate the general public. The average house in the 1990’s did not all have computers, unlike today, where the average household has over 3 or 4 devices, such a desktops, tablets, and smart phones.
The education I received in school offers very little relevance to today’s standards, and I recall much of the most important learning curve came from trial and error. There were also times, that I did a lot of jobs at no charge, as it did not feel fair to charge a customer for my learning curve and the time it lasted. There were also the jobs that did not work out, that I took back and refunded the customer’s money. Over this period, I learned what it took not to have a job come back for the same repair. I also believed in providing a customer two or three options for each repair, outlining the advantages and disadvanatges of each one then recommending the option I would prefer. This way the work does not come back. Learning from mistakes early in your career can only make you stronger in the future.
Today we have 18 years of computer repair experience behind us. We know what it takes to keep your computer running well. We know what it takes to keep it out of our repair room too. We service every make and model on the market so we know the good ones from the bad ones. This is what makes our new PC’s that we make one of the best on the market. The secret is simple. A computer is made up of about 10 parts or less. Each of the parts that goes into one of our PC’s has the lowest defective rate in its class. This adds about $ 10 to $ 25 more per part and makes our entry level PC come in around $600. If we try to cut corners it only increases the customers problems and give us warranty work to do. With computers its like trading dollars for headaches. We will explain what the options are and what you get for your money and why the competition is prices the way they are. We don’t sell extended warranties – they are a waste of money. What we do sell is power protection units, virus scanners and external hard drives to back up your data so you will never be in a jam.
Just like any industry that services a product, the repair department knows what they fix all the time, so they will know what it takes to make a reliable product.
